Dear Family, 7/27/12 Letter
This is your favorite missionary! Ha ha ha. How are you guys? I loved getting letters from you guys. It is seriously the best feeling after a long 15 hour day. Also, please pass along my thanks to Grandpa Tom, Grandma Cindy, Aunt Kathy, Uncle Ken, Grandma Justus, Kirk, Wendy, and the other Welker's, and the Forshee's/Forkus's for sending me all these treats this week. I won't be able to take half of all the food you guys sent me the past three weeks, so I will express the gratitutde of my district as well for the many treats you've sent!
I am loving being a missionary, but I am really glad to be leaving the Provo MTC. I have NO IDEA how missionaries can last 9-12 weeks here. It's a nice atmosphere with a lot of opportunities to do things, but I feel like I've been here three months (instead of almost 3 weeks)! Plus, I don't know what they put in this food, but I've tripled, maybe quadrupled the number of times I have to go to the bathroom. Ha ha ha.
I will miss seeing some teachers and friends here, but I couldn't have asked for a nicer transition to Guatemala. I will go to an MTC in Guatemala with two other missionaries from my district (not to mention a few others from other districts going to Belize, Costa Rica, etc.) And Guatemala is in the same time zone as Utah, so no jet lag! I've met several native Guatemalan missionaries, teachers, and Elder Sam Johnson here at the MTC, and each one talked about how beautiful it is there, how rich the food is, how many places there are to go see and visit, and how HUMID it is in Guatemala.
I am super excited to leave this Tuesday. The date got pushed forward a day (from Wed), and as a result the Travel Office gave me (what E. martinez, Schmidt, and I like to call) a "Golden Ticket" to call home for five minutes before we leave the Provo MTC. I still fly out to DFW at 12:20 pm and after a short 1 hour layover I fly to La Aurora, Guatemala City airport at 4:40 pm. I should arrive in Guatemala around 7 pm on Tuesday. This means that any letters, messages, packages, anything should be sent to my Guatemalan MTC address starting Monday, July 30th at 12:00 pm.
What's my MTC experience like? Well, I wake up at 6:15 every morning with Elder Long to avoid the shower lines, and am ready for the day by 7:10. I eat breakfast, usually pancakes, French toast, biscuits & gravy, doughnuts, and a banana. Throughout the day, I have Spanish classes, teaching appointments, study time, servie on Tuesday, and Gym. I LOVE GYM. We play sand volleyball because the four square in the gym is closed for rennovation. But volleyball is just as fun. Especially since all of these classes all take place in a tiny 8 person classroom, ALL DAY, getting outside is a much needed blessing. Usually pick up packages around lunch or dinner and put them in our rooms, because we have to wait till 9:30 pm to open our mail, and then keep on going to class or devotionals at night. Haven't had a member of the Twelve speak while I've been here, but we've had Elder Featherstone and Elder Coleman speak to us, and Sister Jenny Oaks (a world renowned violinist and Elder Oaks's daughter) play several hymns and songs for us. Then, at 9:30 I open my packages, share the bounty, read the letters, get ready for bed, write in my journal, pray with my companion, and be in bed by 10:30. I'm usually out cold by 10:35, but occasionally I sleeptalk/pray in Spanish anytime between midnight and three in the morning. Ha ha ha.
Then I wake up at 6:15 and do it all again!
I can't wait to be IN Guatemala. It will be a change, but I'll feel that much closer to being a real, in the field missionary.
I just went to a meeting to prep us for Guatemala. A few cool/bad things:
BAD:
-pouch service for mail is 2 weeks, each way
-don't know about the mail service
-no bookstore
-smaller rooms
COOL:
-better food
-72 degrees year round (eternal Spring)
-100 or so Elders there
-computers, exercise equipment, soccer, basketball
-Guatemala City Temple is right next door
-3 hr calling card for airport
-tracting every week
-TRC there
-Employees are often non members.
So yeah, good and less desirable things about the new MTC. Mostly worried about mail. Oh well, I guess everything will work itself out eventually.
Just to let you guys know, I did meet Elder McKnight in the laundry room before you even told me about him. I saw his Timpanogos High t-shirt and we figured things out from there. OK, individual messages:
Mom- I really enjoyed emailing you and felt your love the whole time. I miss you, and pray for you, and I promise you I'll be fine in Guatemala...but if something does happen, the Church is still true!!! LOL. Don't worry. I've only fallen once so far, so the Lord is looking out for me. I remember the things you taught me and they help me even now. Thank you, and always remember I love you more than words can express!
Dad- I love getting letters from you and really miss you. But I am doing my best to work with all my heart. I promise you I won't let you down.
Emilie- Elder Long's funny, but he's got nothing on you! Ha ha ha. I love you. Have fun with the new ward (not too much fun though...) Help keep the family moving on scripture study and FHE, and family prayer. I know you will. just know I'm praying for you.
Riley- Hey bud! I love you beyond belief. I miss you, but I know you'll do great with this new ward. Make new friends (they may end up being your best friends). Hang out with Tony. Get your Duty to God/Eagle Scout. And remember that I am praying for you and love you very much.
Aunt Kat, Uncle Ken, Grandma Justus- Thanks for the cookies. WE LOVED THEM! You guys are the BEST!
Aunt Missy- Thanks for picking up my stuff and for all the love you give me! I love you soooooo much!

Kirk, Wendy, Kristen, Katrina, Adam, & James- Thank you so much for the cookies. They're delicious and much appreciated! And Katrina, thanks for your letter. I wish I had more time to respond to it today, but I am packing and prepping for Guatemala today, so it'll have to be in a little bit. I love you guys so much!
Jakins Family- Thank you for the treats you guys sent me. I miss all of you, but I really appreciated the thoughtful gift. Love you all!
*If I missed anyone else who sent me something, please forgive me! I love you too, but I'm pressed for time and it's hard to keep track of all the people that love me! I'm grateful!
Grandma Peggy & Grandpa FRED- I am SO sorry about the mixup! I had 5 minutes to address 10 letters, and accidentally blew it! I love you very much!
Well, I'm just about done with this letter. Overall, I am having a good time here, I am learning so much, so fast it's dizzying. Health is good, life is good, attitude's good, and I'm growing so much here.
I know this Church is true. I found out through reading and praying about the Book of Mormon. I know the scriptures can answer any question we have; it answers my questions daily. I am learning more about what Christ was like through my service here. I have felt the Spirit with me as I have practiced teaching, and as I have borne my testimony here. There is no place I'd rather be (except maybe Guatemala).
I love you all!

I know that any question we have, we can find an answer through the scriptures.
Dear Family, 7/27/12 Email
I am doing amazing! I have just went to the temple today, and had breakfast there with my roommates. It was a blast. I leave this Tuesday for Dallas/Ft Worth Texas, and then to La Aurora in Guatemala City. I don't have my itinerary on me, so I'll send that to you later today. But I leave around 12:30. And because they changed my flight from Wednesday to Tuesday, I get a free 5 minute call home. So I need to know when is the best time for you guys for me to call?
I couldn't write Tuesday because even though we have some personal time in our schedule, I read in the Missionary Handbook the other day, that we can only communicate on P-Days, hence today.
I enjoyed the muffins you guys sent me, and all the other treats I have recieved. I seem to always have a package in the mail.
Did I tell you that the teacher that acted out Adan is now my real teacher? He is the coolest guy ever, and he was acting out his own conversion. We are now teaching him as Abram, but Abram is the complete opposite of Adan, in that he believes in God, and is so content with his life that it seems like it will be hard to convince him to change and seek more joy. But Hermano Adams (the teacher), has really helped me out personally, and I really look up to him. Pray for him though, cause he gets kidney stones every month or so. He's passed like 17 of them, and he is passing another one now.
The district really enjoys the gifts and treats. I've got more pics to send home, some including me and Sisters Robins and Clayton (seperately), and some other friends. Oh, and I need to send home one of my missionary belts, cause it is falling apart already (the one without the zipper). If you could send me a different one before I leave on Tuesday morning, (so by Satuday). That would be really appreciated.
Two days ago, when Hermano Adams was home sick, we had a substitute teacher, Hermana Ayala. She and her twin (that also works there) are from Guatemala, and used to work in the Guatemalan MTC. They say that it is beautiful down there, and that the food is good. I sure hope it is better than the stuff here. Because while the stuff here tastes good, it gives me super bad gas....no surprises there I guess. I have actually met a lot of naitive Guatemalan missionaries here. Its crazy!
Can't download the photos. No card readers here. Best to just get em home. Or hold on to them.
I teach in the TRC tonight. That will be fun.
Bought new 'Spanish Scripture covers' for my Spanish scriptures (they are made in Guatemala).
Elder Martinez, Elder Shmidt and I are all in the same boat with our travel info, and we all got "Golden Tickets," to call home before we leave. I saw Elder Valdez again just a second ago. I see Alyssa Flake a lot, because I get a lot of Packages, and I pass the Dry Cleaners each time I get another one. I haven't seen Jack Urqhart since the first day (bummer), but I have seen Elders Brandon Vernon, Sam Grover, Daniel Smith, Curtis Killpack, and Elder Barley,
If you can, let Jessie Worthington know that Elder Brown shared some cherries with me, and they exploded on me and my shirt. Ha ha ha. Tide pens really do work though.
Every day I play beach volleyball for gym, and then race back to get a shower before the line grows to large.
There is nothing I love more than letters. Your letters are the best. After Monday 12:00 PM, send all letters and everything to the Guatemalan MTC please.
Recently, I have been learning more and more about leaving everything behind to serve. And I am getting better at that every day.
The other night we as a district were contemplating and discussing the nature of God, time, etc... And seemingly by coincidence, as I was half listening, half trying to study for a lesson, I found two or three answers to our questions in the Book of Mormon and D&C. I know that any question we have, we can find an answer through the scriptures. It happens to me weekly, if not daily.
Oh, and cool fact, Hermana Ayala said that it is very likely I will learn Quekche, Maam, or Kakchiquei in Guatemala. Aparently, because gringos use their throats a lot more with English than naitive Guatemalans do with their Spanish, Gringos like me can speak these languages easier than naitives. Funny huh?
I will always love you too mom! I gotta go. One minute left. So I just want to say thanks for all the letters and all the support you give me. I miss you guys, but not as much as I used to.
Send my love to my friends and family,

One week down! Loving the Provo MTC
Dear Mom, Dad, Emilie, and Riley,
I am having an amazing time here at the MTC. It's amazing how much I've leaerned in 5/6 days. It feels like it's been weeks!
My Spanish has never been better, and I can understand pretty much anyone (here at the MTC of course, it'll be harder with natives). I make mistakes when I talk but I usually get the point across. A missionary in my district moved up to the Advanced level. The branch president gave me the chance too, after a brief interview, but I decided to stay Intermediate. I need to learn the rules.
Unfortunately I don't see Elder Forshee very often. I've only seen him one, maybe two times. But I have spotted Elders Wesley Valdez, Johnson, Taylor Brown, Corbin Byers, Taylor Charles, and Dallin Anderson. And I have found Sisters Robins and Clayton as well. They were all super-mega-ultra excited to see me ("super-mega-ultra" apparently is big somewhere in Latin America), and they all seem to be doing great. I wish I thought to get pictures with all these missionaries.
Well, I recieved a commandment from God to be humble. Three times in the past two days I have been referenced a certain scripture and was even directly challened (me specifically) to be a humble missionary.
Swallowing my pride feels like swallowing too much PB&J sandwich without chewing, but as I have tried to doso, I have been happier, and learned a lot more about what I ought to do to change.
This scripture that keeps appearing to me I want to be my missionary theme scripture on my plaque. It's Proverbs 3:5-6. ("Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.")
I feel myself going through a massive change of heart. It's slow, and I'm a little impatient, but I know this change will be worth it. I am trying to develop humility, charity, and patience. Also I want to increase my testimony of the Gospel, and increase my desire to "proclaim salvation to every soul." I'm still not exactly sure what I wanted when I first went to the MTC, but now I want to learn to love others and want them to receive eternal life.
Tell Sister Lindsay thank you for that message. I really appreciated the testimony she shared. It helped me want to help others more.
TANA: Muchas gracias para su carta! Aprendiento mucho espanol.
I will miss you, but we can always write each other.
JOE: Me encanta mi mision Joe! Gracias para la carta. I love you Joe and I will be back soon. I'll be back before you know it!
Well, I'm running short on time. Thanks for all the packages and letters and meds you guys sent me. (My district is jealous, they call me "Elder Van Pelt" from "The Best Two Years".) I can only write a few on Tuesdays and for longer on Fridays. I get letters the day of, but I get packages the day after, usually. And packages sent on Saturday or Friday night usually have to wait till Monday.
Thanks for everything guys! I love you all, and only miss you half as much! ;)
Love, Elder Welker

I feel like we've hit the jackpot with letters from Taylor the last two days (written letter rec'd yesterday, an email this morning.) Probably won't be like that very often, but a mom can dream! It sounds like he's doing well and learning what he needs to be a good servant of the Lord. Thank you for following him, and for your support. It means so much to me, as Taylor's mom. Love, Nikki PS: I'll post photos as soon as I figure it out!
First P-day Email from Taylor
Hey! I have about thirty minutes to write this letter, so I will go as fast as I can.
I am having a great time here in the MTC. My companion is Elder Long. He is a great guy, and I actually knew him at BYU before we got here. Funny huh? He was Wesley Morgan and Truman Blanchard's roommate, and also on the BYU Folk dance team with Wesley Valdez.
I have spotted Elders Forshee, Bratsman, Byers, Woodis, Charles, Moulton, and seen Alyssa Flake, and other assorted Orem Tigers working in the Kitchen.
My district is fantastic, filled with really smart, spiritual people. There are no Sisters in the class, but I feel like I couldn't have gotten luckier!
My P-Days are on Fridays. Therefore, I will be able to write you guys emails or chat in a way on that day, probably around eight or nine o clock. I don't get to read my mail or open packages until 9:30 at night, but I usually get them the day you send them. And I can only write home on my P-Day, so expect most of the mail to come on Friday or Saturday.
Thanks for all the love and packages you guys sent me! Missy, Ally, Mom, Dad. My district is a little jealous, but I will share what I got so they won't get after me. Lol.
(Please forward the following messages)
Jessie Worthington: Thanks for the treats you sent me! I really appreciate (and needed) that Zuchinni Bread! The food here at the MTC is...starchy, to say the least. Ha ha ha. I live and learn in the same building as Elder Brown, so I see him a lot. He seems to be doing great and it was really cool to see him. Thanks for being such a great friend.
Riley: I love you very much, and am so glad you are choosing to go to scout camp with your new group. Learn to make new friends with the group, you'll be happier. Trust me when I say this...I have had to make a lot of new friends here!
Emmy: I love and miss your antics so much! Seriously, thanks for being the greatest sister an Elder could ask for. I hope you are having a good time on Trek and want to hear all about it when you get home.
Dad: Thanks for that letter! It was great to hear from you directly, and I want to hear more from you.
Mom: I love you so much!!!!! Thanks for looking out for me and taking care of me so well.
Well, as for the MTC, I am feeling the Spirit so strongly here; I had no idea it would be like this! Seriously, every day I come back to my apartment spiritually filled and uplifted. I have never wanted to serve others so badly before. They keep on stressing the importance of remembering our purpose, and leaving all worldly things behind. This is sometimes hard for me because both Elder Long and I love to quote movies...the same movies! Even Nacho Libre! Lol. But I am trying harder to learn to devote all my attention right now to serving our practice investigator, Adan (Adam in Spanish). He is athiest, has terrible family relationships and doesn't seem to care at all for life.
This could get interesting...
Ha ha ha. We taught our first lesson yesterday. It was a different experience. My Spanish was broken, my ideas scattered, and nothing we said or tried to explain concerning faith seemed to get to Adan. He wanted to learn the truth and would read the Book of Mormon if we asked him to, but he didn't want to pray, and he complained that he couldn't understand the Book of Mormon.
We were struggling. But then I decided to give it my last go and bore my testimony of the Book of Mormon. I explained how it changed my life, and I thought I could feel the Spirit in the room so strongly, I felt great at the end. When I asked Adan how he felt then, he said,
"Normal..."
That hurt, but we got him to commit to read the Book of Mormon and think about it. Hopefully he does...
If I learned anything from this lesson, it is that I definately need to be more humble and need to invite with the Spirit rather than just teach a lesson. I admit that I felt a little prideful because it seemed that I was doing really well in my Spanish class and thought that I was advancing faster than everyone else. But when I needed to use my Spanish, it didn't come to me. In fact, the two missionaries that claimed to struggle the most with Spanish ended doing the best with Adan. It was great to see them succeed, and I want to invite the Spirit like they did.
Also, on a more positive note, I also learned how much bearing my testimony could also strengthen it. After I bore my testimony of the Book of Mormon in a very personal, open way, I felt the Spirit so strongly, and I knew that the book was true! I believe that nothing invites the Spirit more than a simple sincere testimony of what you know is true.
Well, I am outta time. I'll try to write as soon as I can!
Love you all!
Elder Welker

Taylor's first letter home!
Letter from Taylor Wed, July 11, 2012
Dear Family,
Hey! I'm doing great! Things here are so much fun and I've already seen Jack Urquhart, April Robins, Corbin Byers, and 3 other guys. My companion is Elder Tanner Long. Turns out that I knew him before. He was one of Wesley Morgan's and Truman Blanchard's roommates, and was on the folk dance team with Wesley Valdez, so I saw him somewhatoften here. He is a really cool, relaxed guy. He reminds me of Truman in some ways.
The rest of my district is awesome too. I'm working hard to learn names and become friends with them.
Ok, so I won't be able to email you until my next P-Day (Saturday the 21...I think the 21st.) So a few quick things...
I need:
Hangers (still need them. none here)
Those pictures (Christmas of Welkers, and most recent photo of all Cuellar/Urbans)
It would be nice to have these things ASAP, but I can manage without them for now.
The devotional was nice, but the best part of today was watching and participating in acted out investigator discussions. It taught me a lot about what makes a good missionary. Things like having the Spirit and sticking to the "purpose" is really important. Also, I am thankful for my knowledge of the scriptures. Because I studied in seminary and at home, I can usually find an answer to a question through the scriptures.
I want you guys to promise me that you will start scripture study together and family home evening in addition to family prayer, morning and night. I know that it is hard working out a schedule for all the busy schedules, but I promise it will be worth it. Not to belittle the difficulty, but I am spending ever day for two years teaching and learning for hours. But I am committed. Please commit to family spiritual time.
I really want to be the best missionary I can be. I have the best companion I could ask for, and I can feel the Spirit strongly here.
I am happy in short.
I had a thought. Mom, could you pick out a quote from my "Words of Wisdome for Missionaries" book and send on to me each week when you write? I would appreciate it.
It's Wednesday night, so I guess I don't have any other questions about you guys... excepta bout the hearing. How did it go? Is Emilie ok? I sure hope so.
I love you guys very much. I must go and ration my time. I love you Mom, Dad, Emilie, Riley (and Sara). I know that I am meant to be here.
Love,
Elder Taylor Max Welker
